I rode the Ninja 500 and the Yamaha MT-03 back-to-back on the same Samui loop because they are the two midweight bikes confident renters most often compare. They overlap but pull in different directions. The Ninja 500 is a faired 451cc sport-tourer; the MT-03 is a lighter, naked 321cc roadster. Both are excellent and neither is wrong. The better choice depends on whether you want effortless touring capability or light, playful agility for spirited solo riding on the island's roads.
Opening the throttle on the Nathon straight, the Ninja 500's 451cc twin pulls noticeably harder than the MT-03's 321cc, with more torque for relaxed overtakes and highway cruising. Where the MT-03 must be revved to make brisk progress, the Ninja simply rolls on. On Samui you rarely need the extra speed, but for two-up riding, the ferry run, and effortless distance, the Ninja 500's stronger engine is the clear advantage. Outright, relaxed pace belongs to the Kawasaki.
Flicking through the Lad Koh switchbacks, the lighter MT-03 changes direction quicker and feels more eager than the heavier Ninja 500. On Samui's tightest mountain roads the naked Yamaha is simply more playful and darty. The Ninja steers more deliberately - stable and planted rather than flickable. For a solo rider who loves tossing a bike through linked bends, the MT-03 wins the agility round; the Ninja trades some of that liveliness for reassuring high-speed stability and comfort.
Loading a pillion and facing an afternoon headwind, the Ninja 500's fairing and roomier seat make it the far better tourer - it shelters you from the wind and carries a passenger in real comfort, where the naked MT-03 leaves you exposed and its rear seat is tighter. For solo blasts the MT-03's minimalism is no hardship, but for distance, weather, or two riders the Ninja 500 is plainly more capable. Touring comfort is a decisive win for the Kawasaki.
After the back-to-back, my verdict follows your Samui plan. I send touring riders, couples, and anyone wanting effortless pace and wind protection to the Ninja 500. I send solo riders who prize light, flickable fun on tight roads to the MT-03. Both are superb midweights and neither will disappoint the right rider. Decide whether your priority is comfortable, all-day, two-up capability or nimble solo playfulness, and the choice between these two becomes clear.
