The first time I opened the Ninja 500's throttle on the Nathon straight, the surge reminded me this is a proper motorcycle, not a 300. I treat that power with respect. Braking on tarmac slick with fresh rain and old oil, I felt the system catch the wheel and keep me straight. Samui's roads turn treacherous the instant rain falls. I brake earlier, squeeze smoothly, and let the ABS handle the surprises. It is a genuine safety net, but I never treat it as licence to brake late - on wet island roads, early and gentle is always safest.
Carrying a passenger to the south coast last dry season, I learned the Ninja 500 changes character two-up - it brakes longer and accelerates differently with the extra weight. I now brief my pillion to hold on and stay still, set off gently, and leave more space ahead. The bike accommodates a passenger well, but the physics shift. Taking a moment to adjust my riding for the added weight keeps both of us safe, especially on Samui's busy, stop-start coastal roads.
It is tempting in 33-degree heat to ride the Ninja 500 in beach clothes like the tourists I pass, but I never do. A sport bike invites quicker speeds, and quicker speeds raise the cost of a fall. After seeing a friend's road rash from a low-speed slide, I wear a ventilated jacket, gloves, and proper shoes every ride. Modern summer gear breathes well enough even in Samui's humidity, and it is the difference between walking away from a spill and a long recovery.
The advice I give every Ninja 500 renter at the shop: this bike will easily go faster than Samui's roads safely allow, so you must set the limit yourself. Stray dogs, sand on apexes, and sudden traffic are constant here. I ride at eight-tenths, leave room for the unexpected, and never chase a faster rider. The Ninja 500 is a beautifully safe, confidence-building sport bike when you ride your own ride - it only becomes dangerous when holiday ego decides the pace.
