I reach for the Ninja 500 when the plan is to ride from morning until evening. Looping the entire island last February - ring road, mountain detours, coastal stops - I finished the day fresh, not battered, thanks to its comfortable seat and relaxed cruising gear. Smaller sport bikes leave me aching after hours like that. When the goal is to cover the whole of Samui in a single satisfying day, the Ninja 500's blend of pace and comfort is exactly right.
Choosing the Ninja 500 makes most sense when you are carrying a pillion. Riding two-up to the south coast last dry season, the bike's torque shrugged off the extra weight and the roomy seat kept my passenger comfortable for hours. Most sport bikes punish two-up riding; the Ninja 500 genuinely accommodates it. When your Samui day involves sharing the ride with a partner or friend, this is the sport bike that lets both of you actually enjoy the journey.
Planning a day that strings together mountain bends and open highway is when the Ninja 500's all-round nature shines. Last month I rode the Lad Koh climb then settled onto the Nathon straight, and the bike was equally happy carving and cruising. Where a focused supersport tires you on the highway and a cruiser flounders in the hills, the Ninja 500 does both well. For Samui's typically varied roads, that versatility makes it the easy, do-everything choice.
Be honest about the wrong days. For a quick town errand, a nervous rider's first geared bike, or tight low-speed work in Chaweng's gridlock, the Ninja 500 is more bike than you need and its size becomes a chore. Filtering through evening traffic one humid night, I envied the scooters slipping past. When the day is short, urban, or about pure low-speed fun on tight roads, a lighter machine serves better. Save the Ninja 500 for the days that justify it.
After years riding the island, my ideal Ninja 500 day is settled: a free dawn-to-dusk window, varied roads, often a pillion, and the intent to really tour. When those align nothing in my fleet balances thrill and comfort better. The Ninja 500 is the bike I choose when I want a complete day's riding rather than a quick blast - fast where it counts, easy everywhere else. For full Samui touring days, it is the most rounded machine I can offer.
