I point Ninja 500 renters first at the flowing sweepers south of Hua Thanon. Riding them at dawn last February, the bike strung the open bends together in a smooth, fast rhythm that suited its midrange torque perfectly. These are faster, more sweeping corners than the tight mountain roads, and the Ninja carries speed through them with planted confidence. For a rider who wants to enjoy genuine sport-bike pace in safety, the south-coast sweepers are the most satisfying road on the island.
Climbing the Lad Koh viewpoint road above Chaweng, I let the Ninja 500 show its sharper side on the linked switchbacks - hard on the brakes, tip in, drive out on the strong midrange. It is more deliberate than a light 300 here but never cumbersome, and the power makes short work of the gradient. The viewpoint over the bay is the reward. For testing the Ninja's handling on tighter, technical tarmac, the Lad Koh climb is the road I always recommend.
Out on the wider ring road near Nathon, the Ninja 500 settles into an effortless highway cruise that the smaller bikes cannot match for comfort. Riding it there last dry season, sixth gear gave a relaxed, unstressed note at speed, with instant overtaking power on tap. These open stretches are where the Ninja's touring side comes into its own. For covering distance around the island quickly and comfortably, the ring road suits the Ninja 500 better than almost anything in my fleet.
The Ninja 500's comfort and pace make the ferry trip genuinely worthwhile. Last April I rode one onto the Donsak boat and spent a day on the fast Surat Thani highways and country roads, where the extra power and relaxed cruising paid off handsomely. The mainland's longer, faster roads play to the Ninja's strengths in a way Samui alone cannot. For a confident renter with time, the ferry turns the Ninja 500 into a true sport-tourer for the wider region.
After years finding the island's best roads, my favourite Ninja 500 day balances all its talents: the south-coast sweepers at dawn, the Lad Koh climb mid-morning, then the open ring road home as the heat builds. It uses the bike's pace, handling, and comfort in turn and shows why it is such a complete machine. I sketch this loop for keen renters and tell them it is the day that proves why the Ninja 500 does everything Samui asks so well.
