I rode the WR155R and the CRF300L over the same Na Muang trails back-to-back because renters weighing a dirt-capable bike always ask which to take. They share a mission but sit a class apart. The WR155R is a light 155cc trail-friendly bike; the CRF300L is a torquier 286cc machine with more reach. Both will get you off the tarmac happily. The right one depends on how hard you plan to ride and how much experience you bring to the dirt.
Heaving each bike upright after a deliberate tip-over in soft ground, I felt the gap instantly: the 134 kg WR155R is noticeably easier to manage than the heavier CRF300L. For a rider newer to off-road, that lower weight means more forgiveness and less fatigue on a long trail day. The CRF300L is still manageable, but it asks more of you when things get tricky. On pure approachability, the WR155R is the friendlier bike to learn the dirt on.
Opening the throttle up a long dirt climb, the CRF300L's 286cc engine simply pulls harder and longer than the WR155R, with torque to spare for steep gradients and loaded riding. It also cruises tarmac more relaxed, making it the better choice if your adventure stretches beyond Samui to the mainland trails. The WR155R must work harder for the same progress. When ambition and distance grow, the CRF300L's extra muscle becomes the deciding advantage.
Both bikes are tall, but the CRF300L's 880 mm seat and longer travel make it the taller-feeling of the two at a standstill, while the WR155R's lighter weight makes its similar height easier to manage. For shorter or less confident riders, the WR155R is the less intimidating bike to stop and paddle. Neither is a flat-foot cruiser, so I always sit renters on both before they choose - the feel at a standstill often decides it more than any spec sheet.
After the back-to-back, my verdict tracks experience and ambition. I send newer off-roaders and lighter or shorter riders to the WR155R - friendlier, lighter, less tiring on Samui's technical trails. I send experienced riders chasing bigger climbs, more range, or mainland adventures to the CRF300L. Both are excellent dual-sports and neither will let you down on the island's dirt. Decide honestly how hard you ride off-road, and the choice between these two becomes straightforward.
