I rode the R15 and the Ninja 500 back-to-back on the same Samui loop because renters constantly ask me to choose between them. They look like rivals but answer different questions. The R15 is a 155cc featherweight built for tight-road fun; the Ninja 500 is a 451cc twin built for relaxed pace and distance. Neither is wrong - the better bike depends entirely on how you want to spend your island days. After a full day swapping, the split was clear.
Flicking between the Lad Koh switchbacks, the 141 kg R15 changes direction quicker and feels more eager than the heavier Ninja 500. On Samui's tightest mountain roads the little Yamaha is simply more playful. The Ninja steers more deliberately - stable and planted rather than darty. For a rider who loves tossing a bike through linked bends, the R15 wins the handling round on this island's roads; the Ninja trades some agility for reassuring stability.
Opening the throttle on the Nathon straight, the Ninja 500's 51 hp twin pulls away from the R15 with effortless authority the 18 hp single cannot answer. Where the R15 must be revved hard to make progress, the Ninja simply rolls on. On Samui you rarely need that extra speed, but for highway stretches, overtakes, and the ferry run to the mainland, the Ninja 500 is the stronger, more relaxed machine. Outright pace clearly belongs to the Kawasaki.
Loading a pillion at Bophut tells the story instantly: the Ninja 500's roomier seat and gentler riding position carry a passenger and a full day in comfort, while the R15's token rear seat and committed clip-ons do not. For solo half-day blasts the R15's firmness is no problem, but for couples, luggage, or all-day touring the Ninja 500 is far more livable. If your Samui plans involve two people or long hours, the Kawasaki is the obvious choice.
Comparing what renters actually pay, the R15 is the cheaper daily rate and the easier bike to handle for someone newer to geared sport bikes. The Ninja 500's bigger engine and price suit confident riders who want more performance. I also remind everyone both bikes need a proper motorcycle licence on Samui. For budget-minded riders chasing fun, the R15; for those wanting power and comfort and willing to pay for it, the Ninja 500 earns its premium.
After the back-to-back, my verdict comes down to your Samui plan. I send fun-first solo riders who love tight roads to the R15 - lighter, cheaper, endlessly flickable. I send distance riders, couples, and those who want effortless pace to the Ninja 500. Both are genuine sport bikes and neither will disappoint the right rider. Decide whether your priority is concentrated low-speed fun or relaxed all-day capability, and the choice between them makes itself.
