TL;DR

Point the R15 at Route 4169's sweepers, the Lad Koh climb and the quiet southwest coast roads - tight, scenic tarmac is where this sport bike shines on Samui.

The Lad Koh Climb Above Chaweng

I send every R15 renter up the Lad Koh viewpoint road first. Climbing it last February with the morning sun behind me, the linked switchbacks let the R15 do exactly what it was built for - hard on the brakes, tip in, drive out on the cam. The viewpoint over Chaweng Bay is the reward, but the road itself is the attraction. It is the single best stretch on Samui for feeling what this little sport bike can really do.

Route 4169 Sweepers on the South Coast

Heading south from Hua Thanon, Route 4169 opens into a run of flowing sweepers past quiet coconut groves that suit the R15 perfectly. I rode it at dawn last month with no traffic and strung the corners together in a rhythm the bike clearly relished. These are faster, more open bends than the mountain roads, so you carry more lean and momentum. For a rider who wants smooth, connected corners rather than tight hairpins, this is the R15's happiest hunting ground.

The Quiet Southwest Roads Around Taling Ngam

Out near Taling Ngam on the southwest coast, the roads stay empty and the surface stays good - a combination I treasure on the R15. One clear evening I looped the hills above the Five Islands viewpoint and barely saw another vehicle, just sea views opening between the bends. This corner of Samui rewards a sport bike with space to breathe. I point renters here when they want to ride hard without the Chaweng traffic that spoils the busier eastern roads.

Roads to Avoid on the R15

Worth saying plainly: the R15 is wasted in central Chaweng's stop-start strip and downright unpleasant on the broken dirt connectors inland. Stuck in the beach-road crawl one humid afternoon, the committed riding position and revvy clutch made me wish I were anywhere else. Keep the R15 on smooth, flowing tarmac and away from gravel, deep sand, and gridlock. Match the bike to the right roads and it sparkles; force it into traffic or off-road and it sulks.

My Morning R15 Loop

After seven years finding the island's best tarmac, my go-to R15 morning is a fixed loop: up Lad Koh from Chaweng, over to the south coast, west along the 4169 sweepers to Taling Ngam, then back before the heat builds. It packs Samui's finest sport-riding roads into two unhurried hours. I draw it on a map for keen renters and tell them to ride it early - empty roads, cool air, and a sport bike that finally gets to stretch its legs.
