TL;DR

Ride the Marlin 5 December to April, always before 10 a.m.; March and April give the longest dry windows, while October-November monsoon ends rides early.

The Dry Season Window: December to April

I completed my fastest ring road circuit last January - 50 kilometres in three hours, 15 minutes - on a Trek Marlin 5 in the cool, dry morning air. December through April is the optimal cycling window on Koh Samui: temperatures between 25 and 30 degrees, low humidity, minimal rain, and consistent northeast trade winds that cool the east coast road. The Marlin 5's RockShox fork handles the occasional dry-season road crack without drama, and the 29-inch wheels maintain momentum on the ring road's gentle gradients at speed.

Early Morning Is the Only Sensible Window Year-Round

Departing from Chaweng last April at 6 a.m. on the Trek Marlin 5 - the road empty, the air still 26 degrees - I completed 40 kilometres before the heat made further effort uncomfortable. On Koh Samui, regardless of season, the cycling window is 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. By mid-morning, ambient temperature and humidity combine to make sustained cycling physically demanding for most fitness levels. The Marlin 5's efficiency helps - less wasted effort per kilometre - but the thermal window is fixed by Samui's climate, not the bicycle.

Monsoon Season: October and November Are High Risk

On the Nathon ring road last October - mid-monsoon, afternoon thunderstorm arriving fast from the Gulf - I turned the Marlin 5 back toward the shop after 15 kilometres. October and November bring Samui's heaviest rainfall: daily totals of 100 to 300mm are common, roads flood quickly, and road surfaces become unpredictable. The Marlin 5's tyre width provides some wet-weather grip advantage over narrow-tyred hybrids, but no bicycle handles flooded Samui roads safely. If your Samui dates fall in October or November, plan for morning cycling only and expect cancellations.

March and April: Peak Conditions for Long Circuits

Riding the north coast road from Chaweng to Mae Nam last March - golden morning light across the Gulf, trade wind behind me - the Trek Marlin 5 felt like the ideal machine for Samui at that moment. March and April deliver the island's driest conditions with moderate temperatures and the best coastal light for photography stops. For riders targeting the full ring road loop or the north coast circuit, March and April provide the longest reliable riding window: 6 a.m. to 11 a.m. before the heat builds. These are the months I recommend to serious cyclists visiting Samui.

Five Years of Seasonal Cycling Patterns on Samui

Five years of riding and renting the Trek Marlin 5 year-round on Koh Samui has produced a simple seasonal framework: December through April for reliable morning circuits; May through September for acceptable riding with afternoon thunderstorm risk; October through November as the high-risk monsoon period where cycling plans should remain flexible. The Marlin 5 performs in all conditions that allow safe riding - its specification does not change seasonally - but Samui's climate determines which days those are. For most international visitors with fixed travel dates, the dry season window is worth planning around.
