I rode the Na Muang waterfall access trail last February on the Trek Marlin 5 - 3.5 kilometres of packed laterite with exposed rock sections and two water crossings. The Marlin 5's 100mm RockShox fork absorbed the surface without drama; the 29-inch wheels rolled through the rocky sections at a pace I would not have attempted on a hybrid or smaller-wheeled bike. The trail ends at the lower waterfall pool, where the surface becomes too loose and steep for further progress on any bicycle. Na Muang is Samui's most accessible MTB trail, and the Marlin 5 handles it comfortably.
Above the Nathon market last March, I found 4 kilometres of singletrack through rubber plantation - narrow, rooted, with two short technical descents. The Trek Marlin 5's tyre width (2.2 inches) provided lateral grip on the clay surface that narrower tyres would not maintain after rain. The interior singletrack is not marked, not maintained, and not obvious from the road - it requires local knowledge to find the entry point. Riders who want this trail should ask at the rental shop; I give directions to riders on the Marlin 5 specifically, not hybrid or city bikes.
Between Mae Nam and Bo Phut last January, the coastal road transitions to a 2-kilometre compacted dirt section that bypasses a sealed road diversion. I rode it on the Marlin 5 at 18 km/h without difficulty - the packed surface with embedded gravel is ideal for 29-inch MTB tyres. The same section is uncomfortable on road bikes and genuinely unpleasant on beach cruisers. For cyclists who want to follow the coast continuously rather than diverting inland, the Marlin 5 is the correct bicycle. The north coast dirt sections appear in approximately four locations around the island perimeter.
Scouting a reported trail above the Big Buddha viewpoint last April, I found 800 metres of accessible path before it degraded into dense vegetation with no clear line. Samui is honest about its trail limitations: this is not Chiang Mai or Phuket with developed mountain bike networks. The island's topography concentrates usable trail in three areas - Na Muang, interior Nathon, and the north coast - with total trail distance of perhaps 20 kilometres. The Trek Marlin 5 is overqualified for Samui's actual trail inventory; it earns its specification on the ring road as much as on the trails.
Five years of systematically riding the Trek Marlin 5 on every accessible trail and dirt path on Koh Samui has produced a realistic inventory: approximately 20 kilometres of genuinely MTB-appropriate surface, concentrated in three areas, with the ring road and coastal roads providing the main volume of quality cycling distance. Riders who rent the Marlin 5 expecting a developed trail destination will be disappointed - but riders who want the best bicycle for Samui's actual cycling, including trail sections when they appear, will find the Marlin 5 the right tool for every surface the island provides.
