I completed the full ring road on the Scott Aspect 950 last January - north coast, Nathon climb, mountain pass, south coast return - in three hours and twelve minutes. The Aspect 950's combination of 29-inch wheels, adequate drivetrain gearing, and comfortable geometry made the full circuit achievable without the fatigue that less well-specified bicycles accumulate over 50 kilometres. On the ring road, the Aspect 950 shines: the tarmac surface suits its specification exactly, and the comfortable geometry is a specific advantage for riders targeting the full circuit rather than a shorter route.
Cycling the north coast from Chaweng to Mae Nam last February on the Scott Aspect 950 - the Gulf flat and bright on my left, the Fisherman's Village at Bo Phut appearing through the palm fringe - I covered 18 kilometres of flat coastal road in 55 minutes at easy pace. The north coast section is the Aspect 950's most relaxed route: flat, scenic, with frequent stopping points at Mae Nam market, Bo Phut village, and the Big Buddha approach. The Aspect 950's comfortable geometry suits the north coast's gentle pace; the 29-inch wheels roll efficiently on the flat coastal tarmac.
Approaching the Nathon ring road climb last March on the Scott Aspect 950 - shifting to the small front chainring before the gradient increased - I climbed the 8 per cent section at 9 km/h without standing. The Aspect 950's gearing range provides the low end needed for Samui's steepest gradients. For riders who find the Nathon climb the most technically demanding part of the ring road, the Aspect 950's gearing is adequate without being exceptional. It completes the climb without requiring dismounting at any fitness level above sedentary - which is the practical standard for a Samui ring road rental bicycle.
On the Na Muang waterfall access trail last February - 3.5 kilometres of compacted laterite and rock - the Scott Aspect 950's SR Suntour fork managed the surface within its travel. The Aspect 950 is not the ideal trail bicycle on Samui - the Trek Marlin 5's RockShox fork is noticeably smoother on the same surface - but it handles the Na Muang trail in dry conditions without drama. For riders who want to add the Na Muang trail to a ring road day on the Aspect 950, dry season conditions are essential. The trail is where the Aspect 950's specification boundaries become apparent; the ring road and coastal routes are where it shines.
Five years of riding the Scott Aspect 950 on every major Samui cycling route has produced a consistent assessment: the bicycle is best suited to ring road tarmac and coastal flat sections, where its 29-inch wheels, comfortable geometry, and adequate gearing combine for a quality experience. The Na Muang trail is achievable in dry conditions but not where the Aspect 950 excels. The interior plantation tracks are manageable on dry days. All of Samui's sealed roads are the Aspect 950's natural environment - the bicycle performs well wherever the surface is tarmac.
