On the Nathon ring road straight last January at 26 km/h - the Scott Aspect 950 in the middle front chainring, the 29-inch wheels rolling efficiently on the dry tarmac - I sustained pace with minimal pedalling effort compared to a 26-inch wheel bicycle at the same speed. The 29-inch wheel format is the Aspect 950's strongest specification advantage: larger wheels roll faster on tarmac, absorb road surface imperfections more smoothly, and maintain momentum between pedal strokes. At Samui's ring road speeds and distances, the 29-inch wheel advantage is practical and consistent.
Shifting through the Scott Aspect 950's Shimano drivetrain on the Nathon climb last February - searching for the correct low-gear combination on the 7 per cent gradient - I found the indexing precise under moderate pedal load. The Aspect 950's Shimano groupset sits in the Tourney to Altus range depending on the year and market; consistent shifting on Samui's gradients is the practical requirement the drivetrain meets. For ring road cycling where gear changes are predictable and not urgent, the Aspect 950's drivetrain performs reliably without requiring constant cable adjustment between rental uses.
Testing the Scott Aspect 950's SR Suntour fork on the Na Muang trail last March - laterite surface, embedded rocks, two gentle water crossings - the fork absorbed the trail surface within its travel without bottoming out on any significant impact. The Suntour fork on the Aspect 950 is a basic but functional cross-country suspension unit: 100mm travel, coil spring damping, functional on Samui's trail surfaces and ring road imperfections. It does not provide the damping quality of the Trek Marlin 5's RockShox, but for the Na Muang trail's difficulty level in dry conditions, it is adequate.
Five years of riding and maintaining the Scott Aspect 950 on Koh Samui has produced a consistent specification assessment: 29-inch wheels provide the most practical performance advantage; the Shimano drivetrain maintains consistent shifting with routine service; the aluminium frame resists Samui's tropical climate without corrosion; and the SR Suntour fork handles Samui's trail surfaces adequately. The Aspect 950's specification is not market-leading at any single point - the Trek Marlin 5 leads on fork quality, the Merida Big.Nine 15 on drivetrain specification - but combines all four elements into a coherent rental package.
