Comparing daily rates at the Nathon shop last March - the Merida Big.Nine 15 priced below the Trek Marlin 5 but above the basic hybrid options - I watched a Spanish couple choose the Big.Nine 15 for a five-day rental. Both were experienced cyclists; both wanted a quality mountain bike for the ring road and coastal circuits. On the Nathon ring road last February - leading a group of four riders, two on Merida Big.Nine 15s and two on Trek Marlin 5s - I found the Big.Nine riders matching pace with the Marlin riders on the sealed tarmac sections. The performance gap between the bikes is more pronounced on trails than on tarmac; on the ring road, both 29-inch wheel bicycles perform comparably. Riders whose Samui itinerary is ring road and coastal cycling - not trail exploration - are choosing the correct bicycle in the Big.Nine 15, and they are not giving up meaningful performance for the lower daily rate.
Three of my Merida Big.Nine 15 rentals last November were cyclists targeting daily ring road circuits for four to seven days - fitness travellers using their Samui holiday to maintain training volume. For multi-day fitness cycling, the Big.Nine 15's comfortable geometry, 29-inch wheels, and Shimano Acera gearing provide the mechanical capability for daily 40 to 50 kilometre circuits without accumulated fatigue from a poor-quality bicycle. At a lower daily rate than the Marlin 5, the Big.Nine 15 delivers the fitness cycling capability these riders need at a cost that makes a week-long rental financially sensible.
Five years of renting and riding the Merida Big.Nine 15 on Koh Samui has produced a consistent rider profile: experienced cyclists who recognise quality specification and choose value over brand premium, ring road and coastal route cyclists who do not require trail capability, and multi-day fitness riders for whom the lower daily rate makes the rental economically sensible. The Big.Nine 15 does not attract the same rider as the Marlin 5, and that distinction is correct - the two bicycles serve different priorities within the same capable cyclist category.
