TL;DR

On tarmac the Big.Nine 15 nearly matches the Marlin 5; the Marlin's fork only leads on the Na Muang trail, so one trail day in five won't justify its cost.

Two 29-Inch MTBs With Different Priorities

Last January I rode the Merida Big.Nine 15 and Trek Marlin 5 on consecutive days over the same ring road circuit and Na Muang trail section. On the ring road, both bikes completed the circuit comfortably - the performance gap between Shimano Acera and the Marlin 5's Shimano Altus is marginal on sealed tarmac. On the Na Muang trail, the difference widened: the Marlin 5's RockShox fork absorbed the rocky section more smoothly, and the Marlin 5 felt more composed at trail speeds. Both bikes are 29-inch wheel MTBs; they differ most where trail riding tests fork quality.

Fork Quality: Marlin 5 Ahead on Trail Surfaces

On the Na Muang waterfall trail last February - riding both bikes on the same surface in the same dry conditions - the Trek Marlin 5's RockShox fork delivered measurably smoother absorption on the embedded rock sections than the Merida Big.Nine 15's Suntour XCM. The RockShox damping is more consistent through the fork's travel range; the XCM is competent but less refined. On the ring road tarmac, the fork difference is barely perceptible - both forks lock out for tarmac sections. The trail is where the Marlin 5's RockShox fork justifies its higher daily rate.

Drivetrain Comparison: Acera vs Altus

Shifting the Merida Big.Nine 15's Shimano Acera and the Trek Marlin 5's Shimano Altus on the Nathon climb last March - comparing shift quality under pedal load - I found both drivetrains performing comparably at Samui's gradient demands. Altus sits one level above Acera in Shimano's hierarchy and shifts slightly more crisply under load; in practice, the difference on Samui's climbs is present but not dramatic. Both drivetrains provide the gearing range needed for the Nathon climb and the ring road flat sections. For ring road cycling, the drivetrain specification difference between the two bikes does not justify a daily rate premium.

Value Decision: Route-Driven

Comparing daily rates at the Nathon shop last January - the Trek Marlin 5 priced above the Merida Big.Nine 15 - I advised a rider who planned five days of ring road cycling with one Na Muang trail day. My recommendation: the Big.Nine 15 for ring road days, or a single Marlin 5 rental for the trail day specifically. If the rental shop offers single-day swaps, that hybrid approach maximises value. If committed to one bicycle for the whole trip, the trail day frequency determines the answer: one trail day in five does not justify the Marlin 5's daily rate premium over the entire rental period.

Five Years of the Big.Nine 15 vs Marlin Decision on Samui

Five years of helping riders choose between the Merida Big.Nine 15 and Trek Marlin 5 on Koh Samui has produced a consistent framework: both are 29-inch MTBs with comparable tarmac performance; the Marlin 5 leads on trail capability due to its RockShox fork; the Big.Nine 15 leads on value for ring road and coastal cycling. The correct choice is route-driven. For riders whose plan is the ring road and north coast circuit - the majority of Samui cycling tourists - the Big.Nine 15 is the better value choice. For riders who will spend meaningful time on the Na Muang trail, the Marlin 5's fork quality justifies the premium.
