The first time I stopped the CRF300L on a slope near Maenam, its 880 mm seat left me reaching for the ground with one toe and the bike leaning away. Now I plan every stop on it. I pick the higher side of the road, slide a hip across to plant one foot flat, and avoid halting where the surface drops away. For anyone not used to a tall dual-sport, thinking ahead about footing turns the CRF300L's height from a worry into a non-issue.
On a wet ride back from Na Muang last rainy season, I kept the CRF300L's ABS fully on and felt it steady the bike on greasy tarmac. Off-road the next dry day, I switched the rear off so I could control my descent with a sliding back wheel. Learning which mode suits which surface is part of riding this bike safely. The ABS is a powerful tool, but only if you match it to the ground - on for the road, rear off for serious dirt.
Climbing a loose gradient near Lipa Noi, I learned the CRF300L's 286cc torque can spin the rear wheel if I grab a fistful of throttle. Smoothness is everything off-road. I now roll the power on gently and let the engine's tractable bottom end do the work rather than snapping it open. That measured throttle hand keeps the rear hooked up and the bike pointing where I want it. On dirt, gentle inputs are far safer than aggressive ones on a torquey bike.
Before riding the CRF300L into Samui's interior I always prepare properly, a habit a local guide drilled into me. Full tank, water, charged phone, and a friend who knows my route. Deep in the trails last April I passed a stranded rider who had done none of this and faced a long walk. The island's backcountry has no shops and patchy signal. Five minutes of preparation is the cheapest safety margin there is, and on a bike that goes this far, it is essential.
The honest advice I give every CRF300L renter at the shop: this bike will take you further into trouble than a scooter ever could, so ride within your own limits, not the bike's. Its capability is seductive. I keep a margin in reserve, turn back when conditions sour, and never let the machine's ability tempt me past my skill. The CRF300L is a wonderfully safe adventure bike for a humble rider - it only becomes dangerous when its talent outruns your judgement.
