TL;DR

The NIU MQi+ Sport suits the tech-confident, experienced rider who stays under 50 km on flat tarmac and values app and speed over the G5 Pro's smoother ride.

The NIU Renter I Met at Chaweng Last February

At the Chaweng rental shop last February I met a Finnish software developer who had specifically requested the NIU MQi+ Sport - he had owned a NIU in Helsinki and wanted the same model on holiday. He downloaded the NIU app before leaving the shop, connected it to the scooter, and showed me the battery percentage and estimated range on his phone within 30 seconds. The NIU renter's pattern is consistent: prior brand knowledge, active app use, and a preference for the sportier proportions over the G5 Pro's broader body.

Tech-Forward Travellers Who Use the App

Riding the NIU MQi+ Sport along the Mae Nam coastal road last March, I pulled out my phone at the beach car park and checked the NIU app: 73 per cent battery, estimated 47 kilometres remaining at current average speed, locked status confirmed. These are not features the Yadea G5 Pro offers. For the traveller who manages their day through a phone screen - navigation, accommodation, activity booking - the NIU app's battery and range integration is the e-scooter equivalent of having a real-time fuel gauge that speaks their language.

Speed-Focused Beach Corridor Riders

The NIU MQi+ Sport's 62 km/h top speed means it keeps pace with the Chaweng-to-Lamai ring road traffic more easily than the G5 Pro at 55 km/h. I tested this on the ring road section south of the Chaweng junction last November: at 58 km/h on the NIU, I was moving with the dominant traffic speed rather than requiring overtaking. For a rider whose beach holiday includes ring road sections at real traffic speed, the NIU's extra 7 km/h makes the ride feel composed rather than cautious.

Eco-Travellers Who Also Want Smart Features

Last October at a café in Bo Phut I talked with a Dutch student spending three weeks on Samui who had rented the NIU because it connected to her existing NIU account from Amsterdam. She used the trip data to calculate the carbon offset of her holiday transport - a feature the NIU app reports automatically. She had covered 420 kilometres across two weeks without a single range failure, using the app to plan each day's route around the battery forecast. The NIU's smart features are particularly useful for the analytically minded eco-traveller.

Who the NIU MQi+ Sport Is Not For

At the Nathon plantation track last April I took the NIU MQi+ Sport onto the laterite road above the rubber plantation and turned around after 200 metres. The 12-inch wheels and sporting suspension - calibrated for tarmac - transmitted the rough surface directly through the handlebar and seat. The NIU is not an off-road scooter. It is not suitable for the beach access tracks on the northern coast, the plantation roads above Nathon, or any surface that departs from smooth tarmac. The NIU's design is entirely urban and coastal - capable on those surfaces, and unsuitable on everything else.

Five Years Watching Who Picks the NIU

Five years of riding and observing electric scooter rentals on Koh Samui has produced a consistent NIU MQi+ Sport profile: a technically confident rider who has prior e-scooter experience, plans daily distances within 50 kilometres on flat tarmac, and values app connectivity and higher top speed over the G5 Pro's smoother ride and longer range. Every rider fitting this profile returns the NIU satisfied. The rider who chooses it for style but does not use the app or the speed advantage returns it having paid a premium for features they did not access.
