TL;DR

Cannondale wins on weight, tarmac speed and handling; the Trek Marlin 5 wins the Na Muang trail on its RockShox fork, so the pick is route-driven, not brand.

Two Premium MTBs With Different Strengths

Last March I rode the Cannondale Trail SL 4 and Trek Marlin 5 on consecutive days over the same ring road circuit and Na Muang trail section. On the ring road climbs, the Cannondale's lighter SmartForm frame produced a consistently easier ascent - measurable in time and perceived effort. On the Na Muang trail, the Marlin 5's RockShox fork absorbed the rocky surface more smoothly than the Cannondale's Suntour. The two bikes divide along a clear axis: Cannondale wins on weight and tarmac performance; Trek wins on trail suspension quality. Both are the fleet's premium options; the choice depends on where the riding is.

Frame Weight: Cannondale Leads

Picking up the Cannondale Trail SL 4 and Trek Marlin 5 at the Chaweng shop last January - comparing them side by side - the Cannondale's SmartForm aluminium frame was noticeably lighter than the Trek's standard alloy. On Samui's ring road with 650 metres of total elevation gain, this weight advantage translates into reduced climbing effort on every ascent. On the flat sections, the Cannondale accelerates more easily after stops and rolls slightly faster at comparable effort. For a rider whose primary objective is ring road performance - times, fitness training, multi-day volume - the Cannondale Trail SL 4's weight advantage justifies choosing it over the Trek Marlin 5.

Fork Quality: Trek Marlin 5 Leads on Trail

On the Na Muang trail last February - riding first on the Cannondale Trail SL 4 then on the Trek Marlin 5 over the same rocky section - the Marlin 5's RockShox fork provided noticeably smoother absorption through the embedded rock steps. The RockShox damping quality exceeds the Suntour fork fitted to the Cannondale; the difference is most apparent at the moment of impact absorption and return speed. For a rider who plans to use the Na Muang trail or any other trail section on Samui as a significant part of the cycling day, the Trek Marlin 5's RockShox fork is the decisive advantage.

Handling Precision: Cannondale Leads on Tarmac

Riding the mountain pass switchback on the Cannondale Trail SL 4 last November - the tight corners at 50 km/h - I found the SmartForm frame's lateral stiffness providing handling precision that the Trek Marlin 5's frame does not match. The Cannondale holds a corner line with greater directness; its stiffer frame communicates surface texture more precisely through the handlebar. For technical cyclists who are sensitive to handling characteristics on the mountain pass and ring road corners, the Cannondale's handling precision is the third reason to choose it alongside weight and tarmac efficiency.

Five Years of Cannondale vs Marlin on Samui

Five years of riding and comparing the Cannondale Trail SL 4 and Trek Marlin 5 on Koh Samui has produced a simple decision rule: choose the Cannondale Trail SL 4 if the cycling plan is ring road, mountain pass, and tarmac performance - the lightweight frame and handling precision are the advantages that matter. Choose the Trek Marlin 5 if the plan includes the Na Muang trail or other off-road sections - the RockShox fork is the advantage that matters there. Both are premium options. The correct choice is route-driven, not brand-driven. Neither bicycle disappoints; both deliver genuine quality at the premium tier of Samui's rental fleet.
